commission: butler mirror

Picture
This commissioned mirror was designed and made for a specific spot in a South London flat. The location is a wall of the landing on the entry hall staircase.

The mirror is positioned opposite a framed abstract painting, an oil on panel by Richard Butler (1921 - 2005). The mirror is named after the artist.

The starting point for this unique design is based on our hand painted strip mirrors. In choosing the colours for this hall mirror we worked carefully with our client to pick ones which would compliment, rather than distract, from the vivid painting.

This commission differs in various ways from our other strip mirrors and is a good illustration of how our standard designs are open to customisation.

In this case we made a tray type frame in solid beech wood. The 4mm mirrored glass panel has polished edges and appears to float within the pink coloured interior.

This design also incorporates other unique details. Here, the corners of the beech frame have two contrasting walnut plugs set on a diagonal. This detail echos the screws on the corners of the painting's original frame, which was hand made by the artist.
As our client used paint from Farrow & Ball in the hallway, so we both decided to use colours from their range for the facing strips on the frame.

They are
Card Room Green, Lichen, Vert de Terre and Mizzle. A fifth colour was used for the interior surround of the tray frame, a lovely dusty pink - Cinder Rose.

The slides illustrate the initial studies and colour sample strips.

An advantage to using standard paint colours is that the painted strips are easy to repair should they ever become scuffed or marked. Many paint suppliers sell their colours in sample pots, so the strips can be lightly sanded and retouched.
