commission: butler mirror
This commissioned mirror was designed and made for a specific place in a London home. The location is a wall of the entry hall stairway, the mirror is positioned opposite a framed oil on panel by Richard Butler (1921 - 2005).
The starting point for this unique design is based on our hand painted strip mirrors. The colours used for this hall mirror were carefully selected with our client to compliment the painting.
This mirror differs in various ways from our other strip ones and is a good example of how our standard designs are open to customisation. In this case we made a tray frame in solid beech wood. The 4mm mirror glass panel has polished edges and appears to float within the pink coloured interior.
The design also incorporates other unique details. Here the corners of the beech frame have two contrasting walnut plugs set on a diagonal. This detail echos the screws on the corners of the painting's original frame, which was hand made by the artist.
Our client used Farrow & Ball paint in the hallway, so we used colours from their range for the facing strips on the frame. They are
Card Room Green
Vert de Terre
. A fifth colour was used for the interior surround of the tray frame, a lovely dusty pink -
An advantage to using standard paint colours is that the painted strips are easy to repair should they ever become scuffed or marked. Many paint suppliers sell their colours in sample pots, so the strips can be lightly sanded and retouched.
The mirror frame is backed with 3mm MDF and has been fitted with two sturdy strap hangers for secure hanging.
This unique mirror is stamped, signed and dated on the reverse.
