commission: butler mirror
This commissioned mirror was designed and made for a specific place in a London home. The location is a wall of the entry hall stairway hanging opposite a framed oil on panel painting by Richard Butler (1921 - 2005).
The starting point for this design is based on our hand painted strip mirrors. The colours used for this hall mirror were carefully selected with our client to compliment the painting.
However this mirror differs in various ways from our standard strip ones and is a good example of how our standard designs are open to customisation. This is a tray frame, made in solid beech wood. The mirror glass panel with polished edges appears to float within the coloured interior.
The design also incorporates other unique details. Here the corners of the beech frame each have two contrasting walnut plugs set on a diagonal. This detail echos the screws on the corners of the painting's original frame which was hand made by the artist.
The four Farrow & Ball colours featured on the facing of the frame are
Card Room Green
Vert de Terre
A fifth colour is used for the interior surround of the tray frame, a lovely dusty pink -
An advantage to using standard paint colours is that the painted strips are easy to repair should they ever become scuffed or marked. Many paint suppliers sell their colours in sample pots, so the strips can be lightly sanded and retouched.
This mirror frame is backed with 3mm MDF and has been fitted with two sturdy strap hangers for secure hanging.
This unique mirror is stamped, signed and dated on the reverse.
